Glasgow airport focuses on security

Glasgow airport has put the emphasis on security as it opens a new £31 million terminal extension.
All passengers departing from Glasgow airport now access the new £12 million security search area on the first floor. The new airport security zone has 10 new Atix x-ray machines and capacity for a further four when needed.
"Security is our number one priority, and we have invested heavily to build one of the largest security search areas in the UK, using the latest x-ray technology to speed passengers safely through the airport, explains Glasgow airport managing director, Amanda McMillan.
Once through security, passengers can move freely throughout the main terminal. With most shops and restaurants located airside, that means more choice for all departing passengers, McMillan continues.
The 4,000 square metre terminal extension also includes a new UK arrivals hall, new bars, restaurants and shops and extra seating. Passengers on domestic flights are now able to use facilities previously only available to international passengers, including the skylounge. There is also a new World Duty Free shop.
The new terminal extension is just the start of the redevelopment of Glasgow airport. Over the course of the next few months, we will begin upgrading the existing terminal building to provide additional seating areas, new shops and catering facilities, says McMillan.
This is part of an investment of £200 million planned by BAA Glasgow over a 10 year period. Other major new developments include a new airport rail link and a second international pier.
"By 2014, when Glasgow hosts the Commonwealth Games, the airport will be substantially transformed, boasting world class surface access links and a modern, welcoming environment. There are exciting times ahead for Glasgow Airport," promises McMillan.
As part of its commitment to improve airport security following last years attack, BAA is also spending £2 million on installing hundreds of steel encased bollards along the length of the terminal building. This will be completed by Christmas, allowing the airports inner forecourt to be re-opened to public transport.
